This piece is built on an antique tin shell sourced in the Piedmont region of Italy and now is reminiscent of a human heart. Within that heart lies a handbuilt pomegranate, a symbol for fertility, life and death. Through my time in Italy, these symbols have crystallized as a driving force in my work.
The imagery on this piece is based on a Piero di Cosimo painting (1505) which itself was based on a Botticelli painting (1485). Both of which were reproduced in a book I have had since I was a child. All three of us painted the goddess Venus and the god Mars laying out like lovers.
